¶George, BM Satires 6178. North (left) and Fox (right) hanging back to back, each in a noose, from a stout post. At the top of the post is a large oval shield with a double St George's cross. Nails are fixed in the shield, and to these the ropes are attached. North's arms hang limply at his side; Fox's hands are clasped, he has a fox's head. A freely sketched landscape with clouds forms the background. On the unpopular and unlikely coalition government of Charles Fox and Lord North which ended when George III appointed William Pitt the Younger as Prime Minister in December 1783.
