¶The FIRST EDITION, written in exile in England. The author's husband, Ferenc Pulszky, was a prominent Hungarian politician, and after the upheaval of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, and the subsequent (unsuccessful) war of independence, the family was obliged to flee the country. Ferenc wrote the 'Historical Introduction' that opens this work.
