GRAHAME, Kenneth. The Golden Age. 9th edn. John Lane, The Bodley Head. 1898
Half title, 1p. ads. Partially uncut in orig. yellow buckram, blocked in dark blue; sl. rubbed, spine faded. Ink ownership inscription on prelim blank 'Mrs Newall from H.M. Easter 1899, Leeds', with the armorial bookplate of Leslia Newall.
¶First published in 1895. Grahame began publishing short stories in various London periodicals in the 1880s; in 1893 a number of these stories were collected and published under the title Pagan Papers. The Golden Age - a collection of stories which first appeared in the National Observer - was published two years later. The stories are notable for the recurring theme of children at odds with adults who have forgotten what it's like to be young, and the book was well received with Algernon Charles Swinburne calling it 'too praiseworthy for praise'.
