AUDEN, Wystan Hugh & MACNEICE, Louis. Letters from Iceland. FIRST EDITION. Faber. 1937
Half title, plates, folding map at end detached. Contemp. drab wrappers, stamped 'Everybody's Books'.
¶Everybody's Books, ased at 156 Charing Cross Road, had the stated aim of helping save paper for the war effort by seeing 'that as many books as possible may do their job twice' - achieved by buying secondhand books from the public, rebinding them cheaply and selling them at 3/6. This strange and fractured work of poems, prose, photos and graphs is a classic of 1930s literature, and feels oddly suited to this composite format.
